The steps you take after a car accident can save lives, reduce injuries, help ensure quick settlement of your car insurance claim, and keep you out of trouble with the law; however, when you are stressed, it can be hard to remember what to do after a car accident.

This checklist guides you through the steps you should take immediately following an auto accident and in the days after. Remember, it’s your choice – YOU decide where your car will be repaired – NOT your insurance company.

Be Prepared

  • Being in an accident can be traumatic. Be aware of your surroundings and take a moment if possible to assess the entire accident scene.
  • Keep a pen and paper with your registration and insurance information in case you need to make notes or make a diagram of the incident.
  • Use your cell phone camera to take pictures of the area, vehicles involved and damage. It is best to take pictures from different angles and locations to get a ‘full’ view of the area.

Immediately After the Accident

  • Stay safe. Assess the situation for your immediate safety.
  • Stay in your car if there is a risk of injury or if moving might put you at risk of further injury.
  • Move to a safe location if your car is creating a safety hazard or obstructing traffic.
